Windhoek - Namibia
Windhoek is Namibia’s capital city is set at the geographical heart of Namibia. Windhoek serves as the nerve centre of the country's business and commercial operations and boasts Namibia's international airport. Windhoek is home to Namibia's brewing industry, and for the less active, Windhoek is a great place to wile away the time while sipping (or gulping) a cold beer. Windhoek is often described as a city with a “continental” atmosphere. This can be ascribed to its architecture - historical buildings dating back to German colonial rule - as well as to its cuisine, culture, dress and educational institutions.
As a result of Windhoek’s Germanic colonial history and the mingling of races, you will see people from albino to darkest black and everybody in between, in all sorts of traditional robes. As capital cities go, Windhoek is one of the safest and most relaxed city in Southern Africa with a whole mixture of Namibia's tribes strolling the streets. Many are in traditional costume and others are in stylish contemporary clothes often with magnificent plaited hairstyles and is also referred to as being the perfect place to start or finish a Namibian holiday. There are plenty of places to stay both in and around Windhoek, these range from backpacker hostels, through bed and breakfast and guest houses to luxury hotels and lodges. Windhoek offers every modern amenity, including internationally rated hotels restaurants, conference facilities, specialty shops, beer gardens and street cafes. The city's infrastructure compares with the best in Africa with well-maintained roads, world-class medical services, educational systems and reliable municipal services. Windhoek is also known for its monuments. A pleasant feature is that most of the monuments are in walking distance of each other. Most visitors to Namibia fly into Windhoek and it is a great place to purchase arts and crafts before jetting off home.
