Fish River Canyon - Namibia
The Fish River canyon is situated along the lower reaches of the Fish River, and is one of the most impressive natural beauties in the southern part of Namibia. Fish River Canyon developed predominantly during the pluvial times - a rainy climatic epoch. With a depth of up to 550 metres, the Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world, before the Grand Canyon in America. When the Fish River Canyon was formed 500 million years ago, the gorge was not only created by water erosion, but also through the collapse of the valley bottom due to movements in the earth's crust. There's nowhere else in Africa like Fish River Canyon. Although it's huge, size alone cannot explain the appeal of the canyon. The views from this place are incredible.
The Fish River Canyon is absolutely magnificent and certainly is a sight to take one's breath away in its immensity. Rock strata of purples, greys and pinks formed over hundreds of millions of years stretch for 161km. Yet it comes as something of a shock when you arrive at the Fish River Canyon, as you have no idea it is there. Hiking The Fish River Canyon is an amazing experience. It should not be attempted by inexperienced hikers as the area is very rugged and a certain amount of skill is needed, especially should an emergency arise.
Vegetation is mainly limited to the river banks except for dense growth of reeds and rushes in the river beds. The surrounding area is home to several species of indigenous birds and animals - and large yellow fish and barbel abound in the permanent water pools, affording good fishing.
