Etosha National Park - Namibia
The Etosha National Park is one of the major sanctuaries for wildlife in Africa and was proclaimed a game reserve in 1907. The heart of the park is the Etosha Pan, meaning 'place of dry water', an extensive, flat depression of about 5 000 sq km. Because of the scarcity of water, game-viewing around waterholes is excellent. Here on the perimeter, are underground springs feeding smaller pans, which serves as the magnet which has drawn such an abundance of game to the area. This great, white expanse is a place of shimmering mirages, and seeing large herds of game in this setting makes Etosha National Park a unique experience in Africa. Due to the carefully controlled size of the rest camps, visitors experience the feeling of being truly in the wilds. Etosha is known for its endemic species of impala, the black faced variety and is said to have the tallest elephants in Africa. The park is also well recognized as being one of the last wild sanctuaries of the endangered black rhino, home to the gemsbok (oryx) with its distinctive black and white markings and magnificent horns, numerous other antelope species, as well as lion, leopard and cheetah. Birdlife is prolific and some 340 species have been identified, and is a particularly good place to view birds of prey, with over 35 species recorded at Etosha.
