Caprivi - Namibia
The Caprivi area is situated in north-eastern Namibia and is a long panhandle, enclosed by permanent water and stretching eastwards from the Kavango River to and along the Zambezi ending at the border junction of Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. The Caprivi Strip, a lush savannah area, is bounded by the Kwando, Linyanti and Chobe River system on the southern border with Botswana and with the Zambezi River forming part of its northern boundary with Zambia. From the east, which has been described as Namibia's answer to the Okavango Delta, to the west, you will find a fascinating region full of wildlife-rich game parks, lots of bird-watching and sightseeing opportunities. Namibia's Caprivi Strip is a long narrow extension of land, running about 450 km from the north-east corner of the main body of the country to the flood-plains and islands of the Zambezi River. The Caprivi is the wettest region in Namibia with its high rainfall and a number of major rivers like the Okavango, Kwando and Zambezi; all of them originating from Angola and draining an enormous area. There are also some smaller rivers like the Linyanti and the Chobe. The abundance of water in the Caprivi sustains a large variety of animal and bird species. Especially numerous are the elephants, though not easily spotted through the dense vegetation. There are no fences, so the animals can roam freely across the borders of the neighboring countries of Botswana and Zambia. The Caprivi is slowly opening up to independent travellers who hitch between Zimbabwe, Botswana and into Namibia, and its well-made roads have made the region accessible.
